Summer Safety and Wellness: Tips to Keep Your Pup Happy, Hydrated, and Wagging All Season Long

At Northern Biscuit, we know that summer is made for chasing tennis balls, road trips to the cottage, and soaking up all the sunshine Canada has to offer. But with longer days and rising temps, it’s important to keep your pup feeling their best - inside and out.

Here are some simple, tail-wagging ways to keep your dog safe, cool, and full of healthy energy this summer.

1. Stay Cool, Stay Hydrated

Whether it’s a walk around the block or a backyard barbecue, dogs can heat up quickly. Always pack fresh water, stick to shady routes, and avoid walking during the hottest part of the day (usually between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.).

Pro Tip: Add a few Northern Biscuit treats to a frozen bowl of water for a DIY pup-sicle!

2. Adventure Smart

Summer is road trip season—but before you hit the highway, make sure your pup’s ready to roll.

  • Use a secure crate or travel harness

  • Never leave your dog in a parked car

  • Pack their essentials: leash, water, first-aid kit, snacks (ahem—Northern Biscuit treats, of course)

We recommend Northern Softies for on-the-go munching. Easy to pack, easy to love.

3. Protect Those Paws

Hot sidewalks and sand can burn sensitive paw pads. Do a quick 5-second hand test - if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog. Stick to grass, dirt paths, or booties when needed.

Bonus: After a walk, reward with a biscuit.

4. Keep It Natural

With more bugs, allergens, and grass to roll in, summer can trigger skin irritations or sensitivities. Regular brushing, grooming, and checking for ticks goes a long way.

And when it comes to treats, simple is better. Our biscuits are made with locally sourced, limited ingredients so you can snack worry-free.

5. Watch for Signs of Overheating

Know the signs:

  • Heavy panting or drooling

  • Glazed eyes

  • Vomiting or wobbling

  • Unusual fatigue

If you suspect heatstroke, bring your pup to a cool place, offer water, and call your vet ASAP.

Let Summer Be a Treat 🍪

Summer is better with a snack in paw. Whether you’re training on the trail or lounging on the dock, our oven-baked, Canadian-made biscuits are packed with wholesome ingredients and serious crunch. Just the way dogs like it.

Stay safe, snack often, and don’t forget to pack a few Northern Biscuits wherever the season takes you.

Happy Summer from all of us at Northern Biscuit!
